Police Recruitment Day puts applicants to the test

LAKE CHARLES, LA (KPLC) -

Nearly a hundred men and women came out to the Lake Charles Civic Center on Saturday to see if they have what it takes to wear the badge.

Eighty nine applicants signed up for Lake Charles Police Recruitment Day.

The all-day event tested their physical ability with push ups, sit ups and a half-mile run. Those who advanced underwent a psychological analysis.

The Lake Charles Police Department is currently looking to fill eight patrol spots. Chief Don Dixon said he was pleased with the turnout.

"It's been a great looking group. Looks like a lot of them are former military. We had some people out here in tremendous shape. And hopefully, they will get through the psychological test. Looks like we are averaging out of every 10, we are running them 10 at a time, looks like 6 or 7 out of 10 make the three parts of the physical," said Dixon.

After qualifying, the applicants must go through months of training, including 10 to 12 weeks at the police academy and another six months of field training.
