CALCASIEU PARISH, LA (KPLC) -

A Moss Bluff man is accused of running a cancer benefit scam.

Michael L. Derrick, 44, is accused in the case.

Derrick is alleged to have sold over 75 meals under false pretenses from March 7-25, collecting approximately $800 from a total of five local businesses. He is charged with theft over $500. Bond is pending in the case.

Authorities, in a news release, said on Tuesday, deputies were dispatched to a local business in reference to a complaint about Derrick.

Deputies said they were told that Derrick entered the business earlier in the week and attempted to sell the lunches. Some employees did purchase them. Authorities said the employees were told the lunches would be prepared by a local restaurant and would be delivered the next day.

"An employee of the business called the local restaurant to order more lunches and was advised they were not hosting any benefit event. The investigation also revealed the cancer patient Derrick said he was selling the dinners for did not exist," authorities said in the release.

Authorities said they believe there may be more people who are victims of this scam. Anyone who has been scammed in this way is asked to contact CPSO at 337-491-3605.

To start off our week, we will have another hot and sunny day. There will be a few clouds that build up this afternoon, but the rain chances are slim to none. Temperatures will once again be very hot. Highs will reach the mid 90s. Some area north of I-10 could reach the upper 90s. Heat indices will also be in the triple digits. A heat advisory will likely be issued. If you are planning on spending time outdoors, I recommend taking caution in the heat.
