Cameron bridges destroyed in Rita slated to be repaired

CAMERON PARISH, LA (KPLC) -

Ten bridges in Cameron Parish destroyed in Hurricane Rita are slated to be repaired thanks to a Federal Emergency Management Agency grant totaling $1.7 million.

The funds were recently announced by U.S. Sen. Mary Landrieu, D-La.

"Cameron Parish has been slow to get back since the storms," said Scott Henry, chairman of the parish drainage district. "When we get help like this, it really helps us get back to normal."

The 10 bridges were primarily on small landowners' property and were the only way to conveniently access all of their land after the installation of the W-1 west canal in the 60s.

When the bridges were destroyed in Hurricane Rita, it limited the access landowners had to their land.

Henry hopes the project will be completed in August 2013.
