Fugitive Keana Barnes captured in Los Angeles

BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) -

The 33-year-old prison escapee who has been on the run since January 1, 2013 has been captured and is now in the custody of the Los Angeles Police Department.

Keana Barnes escaped from the Louisiana Correctional Institute for Women in the early morning hours of January 1, 2013. She was serving a 25-year sentence for manslaughter when she escaped.

According to the Louisiana Department of Public Safety and Corrections, Barnes is expected to be in federal court on Wednesday.  The LA DPSC is in contact with California officials and will initiate the extradition process if necessary.

According to officials, a Los Angeles Police Department officer was giving Barnes a ticket Monday for loitering when she gave the officer a fake name. The officer was suspicious and took Barnes into custody and took her to the police department.  On the way, Barnes confessed her true identity and told the officer she was an escapee from Louisiana.

Officers confirmed her identity through fingerprints.
