LAKE CHARLES, LA (KPLC) -

Fifth graders at John F. Kennedy Elementary School performed seven dance routines for family, teachers and schoolmates on Friday.

They dressed up, wore dance shoes and showed their biggest smiles as they danced the waltz, tango and many more routines.

The fifth grade class began participating in lessons twice a week in January.

Physical Education teacher Belinda Dugas said the program is sponsored by the school system.

"It is great for the children," Dugas said. "They spend time practicing every day."

They receive lessons from dance instructor Rosemary Pimenter.

"Ballroom dancing teaches the students gracious social behavior, excellent communication skills and an awareness of social courtesies," said Principal Dr. Dinah Robinson.

So far, the students have participated in more than 20 dance classes.

They will take part in a competition against other fifth grade classes on April 28 at the Civic Center.
