Coushatta Tribe hosts agri-business marketing conference

ELTON, LA (KPLC) - The Coushatta Tribe recognizes that diversity is critical to a secure economic future.

So, even though casino gaming is their big success, on Tuesday, the tribe hosted an Agri-Business Marketing Conference on tribal lands near Elton.

Tribal Council Member David Sickey said the Coushattas have taken a leadership role in agriculture.

Attendees had the chance to learn about the Coushatta Tribe's hydroponic gardening project.

"This is produce grown in an enclosed greenhouse facility, all done in water enriched with nutrients and minerals and so forth," Sickey said.

The project is in its first phase and produces crops like lettuce and tomatoes.

Sickey said he hopes next year, the conference will be expanded to a two-day Gulf Coast regional exposition.
