Man dies in vehicle accident, CPSO investigating

MOSS BLUFF, LA (KPLC) -

The Calcasieu Parish Sheriff's Office is investigating a vehicle accident in Moss Bluff that killed one man and sent another man to the hospital with serious injuries, according to a news release from the department.

Authorities said the accident happened around 2:45 Sunday morning on Gateway Drive near Belfied Drive in Moss Bluff.

According to CPSO, 26-year-old Jerry W. Sonnier Jr., of Westlake, was driving a vehicle at a high rate of speed when he drove off the roadway striking a ditch and culvert. He was ejected from the car and pronounced dead at the scene, authorities said.

The passenger, 25-year-old Jamie G. Stratton, of Lake Charles, was transported to the hospital in serious condition.

Neither Stratton or Sonnier were wearing seatbelts, authorities said.

Speed is believed to be a contributing factor in the crash.

It is not known if alcohol was also a factor, but toxicology tests will be conducted as mandated by state law, authorities said.
