LAKE CHARLES, LA (KPLC) -

Crowds gathered behind the Lake Charles Civic Center on Saturday morning for the Free to Breathe 5K run and 1 mile walk.

The morning began with a welcome from Mayor Randy Roach. KPLC's Britney Glaser was also one of the many who welcomed runners and walkers.

Everyone followed along as local Jazzercise instructors led a warm-up for the crowd before the race began.

"I'm here to have fun and go run," Eric Powell said. "My mom has cancer and I am running for her."

Many of the runners and walkers wore name tags on their shirt, showing who they were running in honor of.

"My dad died of lung cancer 10 years ago and we want to find a cure for the types of lung cancer that we know of today," Mickey Shannon said.

Proceeds from the event go towards lung cancer research.
