Kannon Burrage scored 26 points, including hitting five three-pointers, to lead No. 9 seed UTSA to a 73-67 upset victory over the No. 1 seed Louisiana Tech Thursday at the Orleans Arena during the 2013 Western Athletic Conference Tournament.
LA Tech (26-6) led 31-29 at the half but Burrage and Michael Hale combined to score 31 second half points as the Roadrunners pulled the upset on a day that also saw No. 2 seed Denver fall in its quarterfinal matchup.
The story of the night was LA Tech's inability to knock down shots as the Bulldogs hit just 32 percent of their field goals, connecting on only 24-of-74 attempts, including only 8-of-33 three-pointers. Meanwhile, UTSA (10-21) hit 46 percent (25-54) of its field goals led by Barrage, who was 8-of-15, including 5-of-8 from the three-point line.
UTSA built a double digit lead late in the game at 70-59 before the Bulldogs made a run as Cordarius Johnson hit a three-pointer and Michale Kyser recorded a steal and a dunk with 1:20 to play to close the gap to 70-64.
Following another UTSA turnover, Appleby got an open look from three-point line that rimmed out and Kyser pulled down an offensive rebound but missed the putback in heavy traffic as UTSA corralled the rebound. The Roadrunners hit free throws down the stretch to hold off LA Tech.
Kenneth Smith led the Bulldogs with 16 points while Raheem Appleby added 12 points.
In addition to Barrage's 26 points, Hale added 17 points.
Tech will now wait for its postseason fate as the NCAA will release its field of 68 Sunday as well as its NIT field of 32.
