WELSH, LA (KPLC) -
The Jeff Davis Business Alliance's legislative breakfast took place Tuesday morning in Welsh.
Area lawmakers and local leaders attended.
State Sen. Dan "Blade" Morrish, R-Jennings, said lawmakers will take up a number of issues this Legislative session which begins April 8, including tax issues.
Morrish said the state is not in dire need of reforming tax structure. He believes the state's tax structure needs to be simplified, however.
Morrish said tax reform does not balance the budget. He said lawmakers face a $1.2 billion deficit and that it will be a formidable challenge to balance the budget.
Morrish also spoke about Wednesday's hearing dealing with Governor Bobby Jindal's decision not to expand the Medicaid system in Louisiana. He also spoke about opportunities for economic development in Jeff Davis Parish.
State Rep. Johnny Guinn, R-Jennings, also spoke. He said he is not convinced that swapping income tax for sales tax is a good idea. He said lawmakers look forward to hearing from citizens on the important issues.
