Following Press Release from State Police Troop I
IBERIA PARISH- Last night, Troopers with Louisiana State Police Troop I investigated a two vehicle crash on LA Highway 85 near LA Highway 674.
According to investigating Troopers, on March 9, 2013, at 5:32 p.m., 24-year-old Joel Morvant of New Iberia, was driving a 1994 Mazda 929 south on LA Highway 85. Morvant was attempting to pass another southbound vehicle when he struck a northbound 2006 Chevrolet Tahoe, driven by 54-year-old Gregory Landry of Lafayette, head-on.
Morvant, who was restrained, died as a result of his injuries. He was pronounced dead at the scene by the Iberia Parish Coroner. A passenger in his vehicle, 27-year-old Cody Snyder of New Iberia, was transported to a local hospital with moderate injuries. Landry's vehicle caught fire after the crash and Troopers are still working to determine if he was restrained. Landry was also pronounced dead at the scene by the Iberia Parish Coroner.
It is unknown if impairment was a factor in this crash; however, toxicology samples have been obtained and will be submitted to the State Police Crime Lab for analysis. This crash remains under investigation.
Last year, 62% of the fatal crashes investigated by Troop I involved some form of impairment. While results are still pending in this crash, Troopers remind drivers about the dangers of impaired driving. Even after having just one drink, decision making abilities are hindered. Make the responsible decision every time, don't drink and drive.
