LAKE CHARLES, LA (KPLC) -

The Women & Children's Hospital hosts bi-monthly Healthy Woman seminars. This month, the hospital addressed heart disease.

"While many women think breast cancer is the number one cause of death in women, it is actually heart disease," Cardiologist Dr. Thomas Mulhearn said.

On Thursday night, women met at the Lake Charles Country Club where they had a chance to get their blood pressure checked and have body mass index screenings.

"It gives us a place to have it done and not be under the pressure of being at the doctor," Lottie Isaac said. "Being at the doctor causes a lot of people's pressure to go up."

The women heard from Mulhearn as he spoke to them about ways to prevent heart disease.

Healthy Woman seminars are a free community resource provided by the hospital. The bi-monthly meetings cover a wide range of subjects.
