DERIDDER, LA (KPLC) -
The Louisiana Department of Agriculture and Forestry-operated tree nursery in DeRidder won't close, but a program there will be realigned, according to Commissioner Mike Strain.
Strain told KPLC on Wednesday that the nursery's containerized longleaf pine program will be moved to the state's Monroe office.
"We intend to keep our presence there and keep the seed orchard," Strain said in a telephone interview.
Strain said the state will be moving toward a mechanized process for the containerized longleaf program. He said the decision was due in part to the inability to find reliable, part-time labor for the program at the DeRidder location.
Strain said the nursery has five employees and they will have other duties.
The nursery is located on U.S. 190, west of DeRidder.
