The Louisiana Senate Select Committee on High School Athletics held its meeting Tuesday at the Capitol.

The Senate Committee also invited the House Education Committee to hear from members of the Louisiana High School Athletic Association on Proposition 18.

That's the new rule that splits high school football playoffs from traditional public schools and private schools.

The plan calls for the private schools to have their own playoff system starting next year. But Parkview Baptist Principal Don Green took exception with the way the Proposition was passed. He says there is simply not enough information for the LHSAA to pass the measure. "Everything we do is research based," says Green. "It is amazing that this proposal has no data to support any of it. All we've ever heard is ‘I've heard,' ‘we have seen,' there is absolutely no numbers to support recruiting violations.

"We really think the introduction of Prop 18 teachers our students that segregation is ok," says University High School Principal Wade smith. "It's ok if you haven't won as much as you want too. Even if it's more frequent than the schools you just singled out. Just change the rules!"

But proponents of the measure say it will put public schools on a level playing field. "Talks of a split in LHSAA between public and private schools have surfaced in the past. Compromise was always the solution," says Michael Kramer Principal of St. Martinville High School, a public entity. "We always hoped that additional rules would bring about equity and a solution, unfortunately they have not."

This was an information-only hearing.

The committee took no action, but did hear from both sides of the proposition that splits high school football playoffs to public and private championships.

Many parents are angry after finding out there is a chance their child might not be able to attend pre-kindergarten for the upcoming school year.

A family's income has to be below 185 percent of the federal poverty guidelines to be accepted into a pre-K program with Calcasieu Parish Schools.

Unfortunately, many families who applied didn't meet those requirements, and have received a letter saying they've been wait listed.
