There may be a glimmer of hope for the future of the prison facility that was the C. Paul Phelps Correctional Center in DeQuincy.

7 News has learned that a meeting was set to take place in Washington, D.C. on Wednesday between U.S. Sen. Mary Landrieu, D-La., and local leaders.

Phelps was closed in November by the Jindal administration.

More than 200 people were abruptly laid off.

While many received job assistance, the closure was a huge loss for the community. Leaders have been exploring possibilities for the facility, ones that could bring jobs to the area.

Meeting with Landrieu are DeQuincy Mayor Lawrence Henagan and representatives from the Southwest Louisiana Economic Alliance.

KPLC will follow up on the meeting and will have more information as it becomes available.
