The following is a statement from Marshall ISD
"MISD and District Alternative Education Placement officials discovered a 9mm handgun in the backpack of a 19-year old senior student on Monday morning. The handgun was not loaded, but a loaded magazine was also discovered in the backpack. Marshall Police were called to the DAEP and took the student into custody along with the weapon. All other questions are being referred to the Marshall Police Department at this time."
From the Marshall Police Department:
On February 25, 2013 at approximately 8:00am, an off duty Marshall Police Department Officer was working security at the Marshall Independent School District's Alternative Education Program (DAEP), when a handgun was discovered in a students back pack. The back pack contained a 9mm handgun; a magazine with ammunition and some clothes.
After further investigation it was discovered that the back pack belonged to a student, Jawone Washington (DOB) 01/18/1994, who attends the DAEP. Washington was arrested and booked into the Harrison County Jail for Places Weapons Prohibited, which is a 3rd degree felony. The punishment for this offense is imprisonment in the TDC for not more than 10 years or less than 2 years and may also be punished by a fine not to exceed $10,000.
