CALCASIEU PARISH, LA (KPLC) -

The trial of Gabe McKeel is underway in 14th Judicial District Court.

McKeel is accused of raping and beating a 94-year-old woman in DeQuincy on Jan. 28, 2012.

The victim's nephew testified how he went to check on his aunt when she wouldn't answer her phone and every light was on inside the house.

He said her face was so swollen she was hardly recognizable and that she kept saying, "He beat me. He beat me."

Earlier, in opening statements, the prosecutor explained the terrified victim turned on every light in the house because she was so frightened after the attack.

Now, they are playing the victim's testimony which was video taped last April. The victim is still alive but both sides have agreed not to force her to testify live during the trial.

McKeel waived trial by jury. Judge Ron Ware is hearing the case.

The formal charges for McKeel are aggravated rape, aggravated burglary and aggravated second-degree battery.

KPLC's Theresa Schmidt is covering the trial and will have more on later editions.
