Beads, dogs and gumbo: Saturday Mardi Gras wrap

Posted: Updated:

Beads, dogs and gumbo ... oh my!

Mardi Gras krewes competed against one another in the gumbo cook-off at the Lake Charles Civic Center, but what makes a winning gumbo?

"The friendship and love we put into it!" Curt LaCroix said. LaCroix is part of a krewe and participated in the gumbo cook-off.

"We made the roux just like the old fashioned way. We cooked it down ourselves," Benton Scott, another contestant said.

So, keeping the traditional way is key. And who doesn't like the traditional gumbo?

"When you do that and you cook your roux and you do it like mama did it, then it tastes just like mama's," Scott said.

And after the cook-off, "take ya mama" to Broad Street to catch the Omega Parade.

"It's probably our biggest one in the last five to seven years," Nickolas Collins with the Omega Psi Phi fraternity said.

Especially after having to cancel last year's parade due to bad weather.

"We're looking forward to it being bigger and better this year because everybody has been waiting for it again," Nellie Rideaux said. Rideaux rides in the Omega Parade every year.

Those riding in the Omega Parade were ready for it and so were the dogs who strutted their stuff down the Lakeshore Promenade for the Krewe of Barkus parade.

Barkus drew in a large crowd for the annual parade, where style means everything.
