Pilot baseball sweeps UHV

Saturday's double header was just as close as Friday's night series opener at Pilot Field with the no. 2 LSU Shreveport Pilots (4-2) picking up a 3-0 win in game 1 and a 3-2 win in the second game of Saturday's double header to complete the weekend series sweep of the Houston-Victoria Jaguars (2-3).

Game 1 W, 3-0

LSUS got a great outing from Rory Young (1-0) in his debut as a Pilot tossing a one-hit complete game shutout leading the Pilots to the series win over the Jags. During the middle of the game Young was on cruise control as he retired as many as eight batters in a row and worked a perfect inning four times. He needed just 80 pitches while walking one and striking out five.

Kyle Pearson needed only one mistake from the UHV starter Nick Huff as he nailed the 0-1 pitch over the left field wall for his second homer of the season; a three-run shot and that was all the Pilots needed. Pearson was the only Pilot with more than one hit as he was 2-3.

K. J. Semien's bat had been the story but this game his defense proved to be a vital part in the Pilots win five putouts today including several long running catches to keep the Jags from getting anything going.

Game 2 W, 3-2

Both teams got another quality start from their starting pitchers with the Pilot's Jason Mouton picking up his second win of the season in as many tries tossing five innings scattering three hits while allowing only one run which was earned and walked one and faced a total of 16 batters with 62 pitches.

Cory Carter (0-1) suffered the loss as he tossed five innings as well but allowed nine hits and three earned runs while walking two and striking out two.

The Pilots scored their first run of the game in the bottom of the first inning when Kade Billeaudeaux and Jacob Lopez executed the double steal on a first and third situation. LSUS added the other two runs in the next inning thanks to a two-run double from Billeaudeaux for the 3-0 lead.

The Jaguars pushed a run across on a sac-fly in the fourth inning and scored the other in the top of the seventh as it appeared that Riley Spencer would earn his first save of the season but couldn't get the final out. The inning began with the best catch of the year by Billeaudeaux who made a running full-sprint running catch and slammed into the left field wall to hang on for the first out. The next batter Spencer fanned with ease and then Matthew Herrera, down to his final strike, ripped a single to center.

The next three batters were walked by Spencer and the Jags brought in a run on a Spencer throwing error as the Pilots tried to pick behind the runner at first. After the walk by the third straight batter the Pilots called on Ben Suit who picked up his second save in as many days as he induced a slow-roller to the right side of the infield that was handled by freshman William Breland to end the game.

LSUS stranded nine more runners total 23 for the weekend series. UHV left eight aboard totaling 26.

Both teams will take the day off tomorrow and practice on Monday before meeting again for a Tuesday double header beginning at 1 p.m. in Victoria, Texas. The Pilots will be back at home next Friday for a double header at 4 p.m. against Culver-Stockton and then the series will conclude with a single game next Saturday at 1 p.m.
