To serve, protect and befriend

JENNINGS, LA (KPLC) -

Blaize Richard is an 18-year-old high school senior at Jennings High School living with autism, but thanks to the big heart and selfless soul of Jennings police officer Mike Hill, he's able to get a taste of living his dream.

"He's always wanted to be a police officer," said Blaize's mom, Angie Richard. "So, for his 18th birthday, we got him a uniform and he took a picture in front of a squad car."

That picture went viral through the community and prompted officer Hill to do more.

"He gave him a tour of the station and showed him the car and everything," Angie said.

But it didn't stop there.

Hill's actions weren't a one-time good deed. He has now embedded himself in Blaize's life at school and at home.

"He's my best friend," said Blaize about officer Hill. "We're partners."

For months, Hill has visited Blaize at school to check up on him throughout the day and allowed him to ride around in his squad car, making Blaize feel like a real officer.

While he's putting a smile on Blaize's face, Hill said it also makes him happy.

"When I'm not having a good day, when something isn't going right, I come see Blaize," Hill said. "That smile alone just makes me feel better."

Hill is no stranger to autism. He is the dad to a 15-year-old son with the disorder.

"I know what it means to have dreams, and I know what it means to an autistic person to feel like they can achieve those dreams," Hill said.
