PPG and Georgia Gulf merger complete

Posted: Updated:

The merger between PPG's commodity chemical business and Atlanta-based Georgia Gulf became official Monday.

The companies will operate under a new name, Axiall Corp.

Talks of the merger were announced back in July.

PPG Lake Charles Plant Manager Jon Manns said Monday that it was an "exciting" time for the company.

"This is an exciting moment for our team, because the merger will create a number of new opportunities for our plant and our company. As Axiall, one thing that won't change is our commitment to providing good jobs, protecting health, safety and the environment, and working to enhance the communities where we operate," Manns said.

We'll have more on later editions.

Also, on Monday, officials announced that PPG will maintain Lake Charles silica products manufacturing after the merger.

"PPG will maintain ownership and operation of its silica products manufacturing unit at the Lake Charles complex, and it will continue to employ about 180 people locally in that business. The facility manufactures precipitated silicas used in end-use markets such as tire manufacturing. The increased use of precipitated silicas in high-performance and more energy-efficient tires has created growth opportunities for silicas manufacturers around the globe," a release states.
