Shooting leaves one officer and civilian dead, two others wounded

CHARENTON, LA (WAFB) - A Chitimacha Tribe police officer is dead and two St. Mary Parish Sheriff's deputies are in critical condition after a shooting in the town of Charenton.

Charenton is southeast of New Iberia, about halfway to Morgan City.

The suspected shooter is 48-year-old Wilbert Thibodeaux. He was arrested and is currently in police custody, according to Louisiana State Police spokesman Tpr. Stephen Hammons.

Hammons said the suspect has a gunshot wound around his torso. They are not sure if the wound was self-inflicted or from deputies. Thibodeaux was treated and released from a hospital.

Hammons said the officers responded to neighbors' calls saying a man was walking the streets with a weapon. Hammons said when they arrived on the scene the armed suspect began firing at them. They also discovered a mobile home on fire.

The Chitimacha officer was pronounced dead at the scene. The two injured deputies were taken to hospitals in New Orleans and Lafayette. They are listed in critical condition.

Investigators have not released the names of the deputies.

Hammons said after investigating the incident further, another unidentified person was found dead. Authorities are not sure if the civilian victim died from a gunshot wound or the fire that was believed to be started by the suspect.

A crew is on the scene and will provide more details when they become available. Watch 9News at 6 and 10 for live reports.
