Jennings celebrates 20th anniversary of Passion Fish

JENNINGS, LA (KPLC) -

Twenty years later, the people in Jeff Davis Parish are still talking about the movie Passion Fish, which was filmed in Jennings and Lake Arthur.

In honor of the movie's 20th anniversary, the Strand Theater in Jennings prepares for a special two-night viewing of the film to the public.

Former Jennings Mayor Gregory Marcantel remembers when the film crews for Passion Fish took over the streets of Jennings and Lake Arthur.

"It was very exciting. It was obviously something that had never happened in Jennings and Jeff Davis Parish before," Marcantel said.

And the Strand Theater in downtown Jennings played host to the world premier of the movie Feb. 1, 1993.

"When we started talking about having the opportunity to do the premiere, well, the community just came and supported it tremendously," Marcantel said. "What we did was say we're going to have a real Hollywood premiere, and we rented klieg lights and we told everybody had to come in evening dress and people were in tuxedos and their evening gowns."

Marcantel said the premiere in the renovated now 74-year-old movie theater was an uplifting experience.

Approximately 800 tickets to the premiere after the production of the movie brought in an estimated $1 million to the area.

The movie had a huge economic impact, but to the town of Jennings it was much more.

"More of, I think, more of a social impact in that it gave the community an opportunity to rally around something that was exciting, that was fun, that was different. And then here we're still talking about it 20 years later," Marcantel said.

And now they're remembering all the excitement. Marcantel hopes the anniversary will show the community where they've been and where they're going.

"We want to bring people back, we want to remind them about this very special event that we had and then be able to talk about all the wonderful new things that are coming," he said.

To celebrate the 20th anniversary, there will be a special showing of Passion Fish at the Strand Theater in Jennings on Friday, Feb.1 and Saturday, Feb.2 at 7 p.m. Tickets cost $5.

For the Oakdale Police Department one of their constant battles isn't necessarily with criminals, but instead with their phones. Their phone lines were down for most of the weekend, and just got back up yesterday, but this isn't the first time they've dealt with this.  The phones are ringing at the Oakdale Police Department now, but this past weekend that wasn’t the case.  “Friday evening our phones went down,” said police chief, Joseph Lockett. ...More >>
