A Lake Charles man is accused of cruelty to a juvenile, according to a news release from the Calcasieu Parish Sheriff's Office.

John P. Carter, 44, of Lake Charles is charged with one count of cruelty to a juvenile.

Authorities said on Wednesday, deputies were dispatched to a local middle school in reference to an allegation against Carter.

Carter is accused of physically abusing a 15-year-old who is a student at the school, authorities said.

Carter allegedly struck the victim, bit the victim and slammed the victim's ankle in a vehicle door, causing swelling.

The reported victim was treated at a local hospital and released, authorities said.

Carter was arrested and booked into the Calcasieu Correctional Center and charged with one count of cruelty to a juvenile.

Judge Wilford Carter set bond in the case at $3,000.
