The 2014 SLC football season will have many changes, the biggest of which is adding Instant Replay to games. WELSH, LA (KPLC) -

It's customary for an incoming police chief or sheriff to audit the evidence room to inventory items in their custody -- items they may be required to bring to court in a trial.

The auditors found something they weren't expecting locked up in a room at the Welsh Police Department.

It was inside the locked room at the Welsh Police Department that auditors found a skull, a human skull, according to Chief Marcus Crochet. But authorities don't know the story of where it came from, or how it got here.

"We were conducting an audit and inventory of our evidence room when we came across skeletal remains, it's a human skull in an evidence closet  in a Wal-Mart, in a plastic Wal-Mart bag. No identification on  it. No complaint number or anything to track it with," Crochet said.

The police have sent the skull to the FACES lab at Louisiana State University, the Forensic Anthropology and Computer Enhancement Services lab. Authorities are hoping scientists there can figure out how old the skull is and perhaps, to whom it belongs.

"They're going to be doing a DNA profile on it, to see if maybe we can match it to a missing person or something from back then," Crochet said.

There are various stories about where it may have come from, but if it's 40 or 50 years old, as authorities suspect, the people who likely put it in the closet may not even be alive anymore. Crochet did contact some former chiefs, at least one of whom had a vague recollection.

"He kind of recalls that a gentleman brought it up here in a bucket either from an attic or found it in an attic or under a house or near a trash pile and then the other story that I have is that it was found in a field north of Welsh. It could be from an old burial site," Crochet said.

The police have pictures of the skull, but are not releasing them until perhaps after the mystery is solved.

Anyone who thinks they can help solve the mystery of the skull in the evidence room should contact Welsh Police.

Louisiana State Police are providing guidance to Welsh authorities as they work on their evidence room.
