Jeff Davis authorities warn residents about 'jury duty scam'

JEFF DAVIS PARISH, LA (KPLC) - Jeff Davis Parish officials are warning residents against a "jury duty scam."

According to Christopher Ivey, commander of the Jeff Davis Parish Sheriff's Office Criminal Investigations Division, residents have reported getting calls from people claiming to be court officials, notifying residents of jury duty.

Ivey said the calls are a way for scammers to glean personal information from residents.

"The caller says he'll need some information for verification purposes - your birth date, Social Security number, and maybe even a credit card number. This is when you should hang up the phone. It's a scam," Ivey said.

Ivey said the jury duty scam has been around for years. The caller often intimidates the residents by saying they could face penalties for not showing up for court. The caller says they need personal information to clear up the situation.

"Its bold simplicity may be what makes it so effective. Facing the unexpected threat of arrest, victims are caught off guard and may be quick to part with some information to diffuse the situation," Ivey said.
