EAST TEXAS (KLTV) -
Flash flood watches are in effect for all of East Texas through this evening as widespread heavy rain is expected later today. Rainfall across East Texas the past 24 hours between 1 and 2 inches has saturated the ground. Any additional rain could cause runoff which could lead to flash flooding.
Slightly drier air has moved into East Texas this morning. However, bands of very heavy rain and embedded thunderstorms are developing to our west and will spread across the area this afternoon and evening causing an additional 2 to 4 inches of rain for most of East Texas. Because of the rain over the past 24 hours the ground will not be able to absorb the water and it will rapidly runoff into low lying areas. It is at this time we expect the flooding threat to increase. Areas along creek and river beds will be at the greatest risk later this afternoon through the overnight hours. People in these areas should pay very close attention to the latest flash flood watches and warnings issued later today.
As for the severe weather threat across East Texas, at this time it appears very small. The wind field across the atmosphere will be very favorable for strong winds and tornadoes today however; the amount of low level energy for thunderstorm development is near zero. There is still a small chance as the front moves through a squall line will develop across Deep East Texas and there could be a few scattered reports of gusty winds. If there are any breaks in the clouds this afternoon allowing temperatures to warm to around 70 degrees, the wind and tornado threat would increase significantly but right now that does not appear likely.
Again there will be a great deal of rain across East Texas today. Roadways will be slick due to the ponding of water. If you come to an area where the road is covered by water please find another way to get to your destination. You never know how deep that water may be and it only takes around a foot of swift moving water to cause serious problems.
