LAKE CHARLES, LA (KPLC) -

There may be some major changes coming to traffic on the west side of Lake Charles very soon.

The new casino, Ameristar, asked an environmental company, Arcadis, out of Baton Rouge, to analyze traffic in the area and poll the public to come up with a solution to future traffic problems.

There was a public hearing on Thursday to discuss their findings.

KPLC was there and will bring you more on later editions.

The hearing was at Springhill Suites. A large crowd gathered.

Many people attended to get the news to find out whether or not their homes or businesses are going to be affected with the new traffic plan.

Scott L. Hoffeld, chief project manager, Arcadis, said the purpose of the hearing was to present the findings of the environmental assessment which has been completed. It began in September.

The hearing was also to provide an opportunity for the public to provide input on the analysis as well as the preferred alternative.

Some of the residents in the Cove Lane area submitted their opinions in the research.

Arcadis officials have said that the alternative they are leaning toward is alternative 21b.

The plan includes a new Cove Lane interchange, including a roundabout, future changes to Nelson Road and the relocation of West Prien Lake Road east of Nelson.

Hoffeld said 21b is not the original one that was first presented to residents. He said a turnaround at West Prien Lake and Cove has been added.

The public's opinion is still welcomed because no action plan is in place.

We'll have more details of the option in later editions.
