Authorities say that one of the drivers involved in the accident on Monday morning on I-10 west of Sulphur has died from his injuries.

Authorities responded to the accident before 10 a.m. Monday near mile marker 17.

According to Louisiana State Police, Troop D, the accident involved two vehicles and two drivers.

Sgt. James Anderson said the preliminary investigation revealed that a 1999 Jeep, driven by 52-year-old Varghese K. Paily of Port Arthur, Texas, was traveling east on Interstate 10 when Paily switched from the middle lane to the outside lane to pass an 18-wheeler.

Anderson said Paily lost control of the Jeep and the vehicle began to rotate.

"The driver's side of the Jeep impacted the rear of a 2001 Ford pick-up truck that was parked on the right shoulder, driven by 63-year-old Richard D. Schneider of Waveland, Mississippi," Anderson said.

Both men were transported to a nearby hospital. Paily was pronounced dead at the hospital from his injuries. Schneider suffered moderate injuries. Both men were wearing a seat belt, Anderson said.

Impairment is not suspected at this time.

Routine toxicology samples were obtained from the drivers and will be submitted for analysis.

The crash remains under investigation.

Anderson said it was raining at the time of the crash. He said excessive speed for the weather conditions is suspected to be a factor in the crash.

Troop D has investigated 26 fatal crashes so far in 2012, resulting in 31 fatalities.
