(Source: KTRK/CNN)JEFFERSON COUNTY, TX (RNN) – An enormous crash involving an estimated 100 vehicles happened Thursday on Interstate 10, and at least two people are reported dead.
KFDM News reported dozens were injured, including several in critical condition, from the incident. A heavy fog covering around 8 a.m. CT appeared to be the cause of the pileup.
A Texas Department of Public Safety spokeswoman confirmed the deaths to KFDM. The wreck closed both sides of the interstate; I-10 west reopened around noon but I-10 east remains closed.
A representative from Baptist Beaumont Hospital told reporters they received around 20 patients, some of whom were in critical condition. One child and an adult with head injuries were transported to a Houston hospital.
Chief Charles Sonnier of the Labelle-Fannett Volunteer Fire Department said the vehicles involved in the accidents include seven tractor-trailers on the eastbound lanes, according to KFDM. Two were moving hazardous materials but were not leaking.
Sonnier said firefighters had to use the Jaws of Life to cut people out of a car and pickup truck.
