LAKE CHARLES, LA (KPLC) -
Lake Charles Police are reporting a fatality from an accident near the intersection of E. McNeese St. and South Park Drive.
Police say just after 9:30 p.m. Saturday, a 2003 White Chevrolet Avalanche was traveling westbound on E. McNeese. As it slowed to enter the middle turn lane to make a left turn, the vehicle struck a 53-year-old Lake Charles woman. The victim was walking east in the turn lane. She has been identified as Deborah Bergeron of Lake Charles.
The driver told authorities he didn't see the woman walking in the roadway until the last second.
Acadian Ambulance arrived on the scene, but Bergeron had already died from her injuries.
Police say alcohol is not suspected in this accident. However, a routine toxicology test is expected to confirm that. While police investigate, a news release issued Saturday morning indicated the Avalanche had no past violations and no citations were issued.
