CALCASIEU PARISH, LA (KPLC) -

Employees under the Calcasieu School System will receive a bonus on their paychecks at the end of November.

This is the first time the Calcasieu Parish School Board will give a supplement to employees since 2008.

"The taxes, local sales taxes have improved and so we have a little money in our budget we want to pass along to our employees," CPSB Member Randy Burleigh said.

Burleigh is also chair of the CPSB Budget Committee.

He said the budget to spend on employee bonuses is $4,974,540. With this money, each full-time employee will receive an $800 bonus and part-time employees will receive a $400 bonus on their Nov. 30 paychecks.

"We don't pay our employees as much as we would like to pay them for the work that they do and the stuff our state government has put on this year, more, and yet we're not giving them a pay raise so this is one thing we can say thanks," Burleigh said.

The money comes from the board's general fund. Burleigh hopes it's not the last supplement they can give to the employees.

"If the money is there, like this board has demonstrated in years past, the money's there. We'll pass it on to our employees," he said.
