LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - Clothes dryer fires typically peak in the Fall and Winter months. According to FEMA report released in August of this year, an estimated 2,900 clothes dryer fires in residential buildings are reported to U.S. fire departments each year and cause an estimated 5 deaths, 100 injuries, and $35 million in property loss. So, a product to help prevent such fires should sell like hot cakes! That's what one manufacturer is hoping to see from their 'Lint Lizard' product which touts its ability to find and remove lint that your dryer's catcher misses. This week I 'Try It Before You Buy It.'

The infomercial for the product claims the 'Lint Lizard' is "a majic wand that cleans deep into any dryer!"

I was very skeptical from the start on whether or not this product would perform as well as the box and commercial claimed. It consists of three pieces that attach to your home vacuum cleaner. One piece is a 40 inch piece of hose that's suppose to find the cracks and crevices of your dryer where lint can hide and suck it out to make the appliance much less likely to catch fire.

The first concern I had was with the 40 inch hose. It came out of the box coiled up and pretty much stays that way once you attach it to your vacuum cleaner. So it's very difficult to guide the hose into the dryer's lint catcher area or the dryer vent that leads to the outside of your house. I attached all the parts, hooked up the 'Lint Lizard' to my vacuum and away I went with trying to clear my lint trap. After several minutes, I found myself not being very impressed with the product. I saw absolutely no dryer lint coming out through the product. So, on to the outside to test the product's ability at cleaning my dryer vent.

After adjusting the drawing power of the 'Lint Lizard' to its maximum level, only a very small amount of dryer lint was vacuumed out of my vent. At the end of the the test, the bottom of my vacuum canister just had a very small amount of lint that the 'Lint Lizard' captured from my dryer. Now I admit, I do clean the lint trap before every use, but I have a hard time believing my dryer is that clean!

We found it at Walgreens in their 'As Seen on TV' isle for $10.99. In the end, it's my opinion that the 'Lint Lizard' doesn't work as well as portrayed on the TV commercial.
