SHREVEPORT, LA (KSLA) -
A Shreveport woman is in the hospital after her vehicle fell off the interstate and nearly 60 feet to the ground Sunday night.
Shreveport police say they responded around 9:15 p.m. to a report of a crash on I-49 South at the 70th Street exit. They arrived to find 23-year-old Kiara Williams of Shreveport trapped in her crushed 2000 Ford Explorer on the ground below the interstate, near Dillman Avenue at West 79th Street.
Police believe Williams lost control and went over a concrete barrier after swerving to avoid a mattress left in the roadway.
Williams was pulled from the crushed vehicle, which had landed on its roof, by the Shreveport Fire Department. She was taken to LSU Medical Center with what police now describe as minor injuries, although she may have suffered a bruised lung. She is currently listed in serious condition.
Police say Williams was wearing her seatbelt, which may have helped save her life.
