JEFF DAVIS PARISH, LA (KPLC) -

The ball is moving forward for a rum distillery operation in Jeff Davis Parish.

Marion Fox, executive director of the Jeff Davis Economic Development and Tourist Commission, told KPLC that the Police Jury voted to approve an alcohol permit for Louisiana Spirits to distill and sell high content alcohol in their gift shop.

Fox said police jurors also authorized the president to sign all documents related to reimbursement of an Economic Development Award Program grant for the company. That funding will provide infrastructure support for Louisiana Spirits, she said.

Fox said construction is about 80 percent complete. She said once the facility is underway, it will provide a great boost to tourism in the area.

"Louisiana Spirits brings the level of tourism up another notch for Jeff Davis Parish. It will not only bring in visitors to its own facility, but will also help to funnel folks to nearby restaurants and other tourist attractions around Jeff Davis Parish. It's a very exciting project for us," she said.

The distillery, which is being built just off Interstate 10 in Lacassine, is expected to hold several molasses tanks and will have two specialties – a light rum and a spiced rum.
