MERRYVILLE, LA (KPLC) -
Beauregard Parish Sheriff's officials confirm that human remains have been found in an area off U.S. 190, west of Merryville.
Spokesman for Beauregard Parish Sheriff's Office, Chief Deputy Joe Toler said that deputies and detectives responded to an area west of Merryville on Tuesday evening to follow up on a report received that the upper portion of a human skull was found by someone while hunting arrow heads.
Toler said that detectives reported that several human bones were found scattered about in the same area.
"The investigation continues with the assistance of LSU's Forensic Unit headed by Ms. Mary Manheim," Toler said.
Some people have questioned whether the remains may be those of a man missing from Merryville since September, but Toler said that is only speculation. Toler said no confirmation has been made.
Beauregard authorities told KPLC's Lee Peck that initially, Merryville Police got the call.
The Beauregard Parish Sheriff's Office responded at about 4:30 p.m. Tuesday. They marked the area off and secured it. It was getting dark, so they came back on Wednesday, along with LSU FACES personnel.
The area is reportedly near a body of water.
LSU FACES now has the remains. They will be looking into the identity and the manner of death.
BPSO officials have said that they do not know the identity.
"It is still under investigation," said V.J. Franks of the BPSO.
