Grant money and sales tax renewal for Vinton toward road and bri - KPLC 7 News, Lake Charles, Louisiana

Vinton eyeing road and bridge upgrades

Posted: Updated:

Some big changes are coming to Vinton. The town wants to repair or replace an old bridge on a major road in Vinton that plenty of vehicles cross every day.

"The bridge was inspected last year and found to be in critical condition and in need of being repaired or replaced," said Vinton Mayor Kenneth Stinson.

And a plan is in place to get those replaces taken care of. But it's an expense that requires support outside of city limits.

At the Calcasieu Parish Police Jury meeting on Thursday, Vinton was awarded a grant of $442,500 which will help with the cost of repairing the old bridge. But construction won't happen until 2013.

"We'll probably look to do something by June," Stinson said. "We'll wait until school is over so it doesn't impact traffic flows. The summer isn't quite as bad, so we'll try to make it as convenient as possible for everyone."

However, the bridge isn't the only thing on the to-do list. The city also wants to improve the streets.

Stinson said they want to improve almost 7,000 feet of street in town. All of that with the help of the city's sales tax revenues.

But the sales tax needs to be renewed every 10 years. And as the tenth year for the current sales tax comes to an end, the renewal will be on the Nov. 6 ballot.

"The sales tax is a renewal of a half-cent sales tax. The purpose of the tax is for streets and fire protection. Seventy-five percent goes for streets and 25-percent goes for fire protection," Stinson said.

He said the money that comes in from the sales tax will be put in the bank and as the city accumulates enough money, street improvements will continue throughout the town of Vinton.
