Barbe student hit in crosswalk, suffers minor injuries

A Barbe High School student was hit by a vehicle Thursday morning in front of the school and suffered minor injuries, according to a news release from the Lake Charles Police Department.

Department spokesman Mark Kraus, Deputy Chief of Police, said the incident happened around 7:49 a.m. Thursday.

Kraus said officers responded to a call of an auto-pedestrian crash in front of the school on West McNeese Street.

He said an investigation revealed that a Barbe student was walking from the student parking lot to the school at the time of the accident.

"The juvenile was crossing McNeese Street within the confines of the provided crosswalk at the time of the crash," Kraus said.

Kraus said the driver of the 2003 Dodge pickup involved in the incident was 41-year-old Donald Leday, who reportedly advised that he was traveling eastbound in the inside (left lane) and did not see the student in the crosswalk.

Kraus said that the student was taken to Lake Charles Memorial Hospital.

Leday was taken to St. Patrick's Hospital for an unrelated medical condition, Kraus said.

Leday was cited for failure to yield, according to Kraus.
