Amazon hiring thousands of seasonal workers to help with holiday rush

MURFREESBORO, TN (WSMV) -

If you are out of work or just looking to make a little extra holiday cash, there are several thousand seasonal jobs available throughout Middle Tennessee. Amazon announced it will hire tens of thousands of jobs across the country. The company is gearing up for the holiday rush, but they need workers to fill millions of online holiday orders.

Timothy Pierce was laid off from his job recently and has been on the job hunt ever since.

"I desperately need a job right now, Pierce said. "It's hard to find one, especially bouncing around from job to job."

The new Amazon Fulfillment Center in Murfreesboro is now up and operating just in time for the peak holiday season.

Pierce thought the company was done looking for workers, but he was wrong.

"Knowing that I walked in here today, and they are hiring on the spot is great," Pierce said.

Amazon announced it will hire 50,000 seasonal workers at 40 fulfillment centers across the U.S., 3,000 in Murfreesboro and thousands more in Wilson, Hamilton and Bradley counties.

"I've told people who come in, 'If you leave without a job, there is something wrong,'" said Cathy Brotherton, a manager at Tennessee Career Center Murfreesboro.

Amazon is using SMX, a temp agency, to hire its seasonal workers in Rutherford County.

"They are in here every day interviewing 30 to 50 a day (and) hiring about 20 a day," Brotherton said.

Pierce is hoping to be of them.

"If I walk out with a job, it will be a great feeling," he said.

About an hour later he left with a smile on his face. He got the job and will have employment at least until the end of the year.

Amazon is also still hiring full-time positions. Career center leaders said some of those seasonal workers do have a pretty good chance of getting permanent jobs.

SMX will be at the Tennessee Career Center Murfreesboro daily from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. hiring seasonal workers for Amazon until they reach 3,000.
