LAKE CHARLES, LA (KPLC) -
Fire and police helped educate the public during a national safety weekend event.
Local law enforcement agencies took the chance to teach kids about fire and biking safety in the K-Mart parking lot in Lake Charles.
The Fire Department answered questions about the emergency equipment on display. They also reminded people of the importance of working smoke detectors.
Troop D of the State Police were there. They set up a bike safety course to remind kids that it's a state law to wear a helmet and to use hand signals while riding a bike.
"We're teaching them the proper signals to use whenever riding a bicycle," said Sgt. James Anderson with Louisiana State Police. "The importance of a stop sign, yield sign, what to do at a railroad crossing ... Just trying to give them some basic information that they can use to be safer whenever they're on the roadways."
