One person died in an early Monday morning accident on the I-10 bridge westbound at mile marker 29 in Lake Charles, according to the Lake Charles Police Department.

Police spokesperson Mark Kraus said the crash victim was 27-year-old Derrick Barton of Denham Springs.

Kraus said the accident happened at around 4:15 a.m. Monday.

Kraus said the investigation revealed that both vehicles were traveling west when the driver of a Dodge Caliber struck the rear of a Ford rollback tow truck.

Barton, the front right passenger in the Dodge Caliber, was killed instantly, Kraus said.

Kraus said a passenger in the rear of the Dodge was transported to a local hospital where he is listed in critical condition. The driver reportedly suffered minor injuries.

The driver of the Ford was uninjured.

Both drivers submitted to blood alcohol tests and the results are pending.

The investigation is continuing.
