When McNeese State beat Middle Tennessee 27-21 last Thursday, it was the Cowboys' third win over an FBS football program since 2000, and the rest of the nation was definitely impressed.
The Southland Conference honored running back Marcus Wiltz as its offensive player of the week. Wiltz rushed for 105 yards on 20 carries and led McNeese to a total of 298 yards on the ground.
The Southland also named punter Jean Breaux its special teams player of the week, while College Sports Madness named safety Terrence Cahee its national defensive player of the week.
McNeese State is also now in the FCS top 25. The coaches moved the Cowboys up into a tie for 21st, and one coach even gave McNeese a first-place vote. Sam Houston State is still on top.
McNeese is also 22nd in the Sports Network media poll. All in all, there is much to be pleased about for the Cowboys this week.
"Hopefully it's a big momentum builder," said Cowboys head coach Matt Viator. "We talked about that when we got back. And it's not so much what you did, as what you should be able to do... using this as just one step in building toward being what hopefully we think we can become."
