Tornado rips through Pascagoula home; Elderly couple okay

PASCAGOULA, MS (WLOX) -

Not much is left of the home of W.T. and Daisy Sparkman on Shepard Avenue in Pascagoula. A twister that emerged from the clouds at 7am Thursday nearly destroyed it in just moments.

One of the neighbors, Billy Perkins, described the chaotic scene.

"I was actually coming out the side door of my house to get the truck and head to work and this tornado that caused all this damage came through." Perkins said.  "You could see it coming right across these rooftops behind me, through the tops of these trees and hit down on the next house over and just literally exploded the roof off the house."

The elderly couple's son, Bill Sparkman, got here as soon as he could.  "The weather was kind of bad and I couldn't get over here right away to help out and all kinds of stuff was going through my head as to what could have happened and just thank God they came out of it without a scratch." Sparkman said.

They were helped by a dozen neighbors who came quickly to their aid, helping the couple emerge safely from the debris.

The memories of this morning twister in Pascagoula brought back memories of something else that happened seven years ago, Hurricane Katrina.

And just like then, this community came together, according to neighbor Colleen Larsen.  "This is a great neighborhood and we all look out for each other and help each other, especially in times like this." Larsen said.  "We were all here together during Katrina and we helped other then too so we're all ready to help anytime."

Because of that help, Bill Sparkman had just one thing left to say.  "I just thank everybody that an to their aid since I couldn't be here."

The Sparkmans will be staying with relatives in Jackson County while repairs are being made to the home.
