High School Football Preview

High school football is here!  Starting Thursday night, assuming Isaac doesn't change everything that is, everything kicks off with Sam Houston at St. Louis.  The St. Louis Saints are back playing at Cougar Stadium in a bit of a homecoming.  KPLC 7 Sports will have highlights and reactions from that game.

In District 4-3A, it was Jennings' four point loss to Notre Dame that cost the Bulldogs the district title.  This season Jennings will have to make due without runningbacks Dylan Lavergne and Tre Richardson, but they do have four starters returning on the offensive line 6 on defense.  In addition they have senior Jayln Boutte back under center. 

After losing in the quarterfinals last season by one point to Marksville, Jennings head coach Rusty Phelps says this group is more motivated than ever.

"A lot of these guys that are seniors played on that team last year so hopefully we can pick up where we left off last year."  Phelps said.  "I just think they're fun to watch and they practice extremely hard. They've worked extremely hard in the summer time and it seems like they've got good chemistry."

Continuing the district previews, a new era dawns on Westlake.  For the first time in 35 years, former South Beau head coach Shawn Demerrit has taken over the program.  One of the biggest changes he's made thus far:  switching from the slot to a spread offense.  With the new direction, the rams look to make a push past the second round of the playoffs this season.

Speaking of South Beauregard, the Knights also have a new head coach in Dwight Hudler.  Hudler formerly worked under legendary coach Max Calderera at Westlake.  Hudler has 11 starters returning as the Knights look to rebound after missing the last two season playoffs.

To cap off 3A, Iowa second year head coach Sean Richard is looking for a big turnaround.  After a winless record in district play, the Knights are solid on offense and will implement a 3-4 defensive scheme that includes seven returning stars.

    A Singer man pled guilty on Wednesday to robbing a DeQuincy bank of almost $16,000 in December, according to U.S Attorney David C. Joseph's office. Gordon Scott Cooper, 56, Singer, pleaded guilty before U.S. Magistrate Judge Kathleen Kay to one count of bank robbery. The guilty plea states that Cooper entered a bank with an air-powered BB gun that looked like an automatic pistol and stole $15,999 from two teller drawers. Police later learned that a maroon Honda Pilot had been s...
