SPARTANBURG, SC (FOX Carolina) -
Deputies said a Spartanburg mother left her 3-year-old girl alone in a Walmart while she claimed to be asleep in her car for several hours Monday night.
Spartanburg County deputies were called to the Walmart on Highway 9 in Boiling Springs Monday about 10 p.m. after employees and customers reported a little girl had been found alone.
According to a deputy's report, the girl told employees her mom was in the bathroom, but after making several announcements about a lost child over the intercom and checking store surveillance, they saw that the mom had left the building.
When deputies arrived, they said the little girl told them her mom was named "Kim," which matched the IDs in the woman's purse that was also left with the girl.
One of the customers said she saw the mom, identified as 28-year-old Kimberly Brewer, and she appeared to be intoxicated or on some type of drug, the report said.
Deputies said when searching through the purse to figure out how to contact Brewer, they found a bag of methamphetamine inside her wallet. Because Brewer could not be located at the Walmart or her house, the child was put in Department of Social Services custody, the report said.
About five hours later, deputies were called back to the store after Brewer returned inside the Walmart. Brewer said she had been asleep inside her car, when she woke and realized her child and purse were missing, the report said.
"She had gone into her car, fallen asleep and passed out as a result of the narcotics," said Lt. Tony Ivey of the Spartanburg Sheriff's Office.
Brewer was charged with possession of methamphetamine and neglect of a child. She was released from the county jail on a $25,000 bond. FOX Carolina stopped by her home Tuesday evening but she did not want to comment on the incident.
Deputies said the women did appear to be upset about what had happened.
"She was very distraught about what had happened," Ivey said. "At her bond hearing she was very upset about what happened, and her charges and how she had gotten them."
Walmart did not release the surveillance video gave FOX Carolina this statement:
"We appreciate the efforts of our associates as well as the quick response from local police. We will continue to work with police and provide information to them as needed."
