LAKE CHARLES, LA (KPLC) -

Competent to stand trial.

That was the ruling Wednesday in 14th Judicial District Court on a man accused of killing a Lake Charles woman and attempting to kill his mother and sister.

Timothy Dangerfield, 31, was charged with murdering 22-year-old Shacerista Jones in September 2011 on General Patton Street in Lake Charles.

Dangerfield was declared competent to stand trial after two psychiatrists testified he can respond logically and appropriately and is able to assist his attorneys in his defense.

Dangerfield was examined after changing his plea to not guilty by reason of insanity.

Dangerfield was shot by Lake Charles police when he allegedly refused to drop his gun. Police say he also stabbed himself.
