LAKE CHARLES, LA (KPLC) -
When Tyrann Mathieu was invited to leave the LSU football team. The Associated Press allowed its writers to re-cast their votes for its preseason poll and LSU, which would have been number one in the original poll, fell to number three after the voters re-voted.
We can only wonder; if Mathieu had come to McNeese State, would that have put the Cowboys in the top ten? We will never know, but we do know that the Cowboys are not in the top 25 of the FCS Preseason Coaches Poll. McNeese did receive one vote for 25th, but that is not enough to get the Cowboys into the national rankings.
Defending national champion North Dakota State has the top spot in the poll as well as 19 of the 26 first place votes. The Bison are followed by last year's runner-up Sam Houston State. Sam Houston is a big favorite to win the Southland Conference again this season. Two other Southland teams made the preseason top 25: Central Arkansas at number 19 and the SFA Lumberjacks received number 24.
McNeese opens the regular season next Thursday on the road at Middle Tennessee State.
