The City of Lake Charles will not be able to begin enforcement of its stricter sex offender registration law, at least not for now.
The new ordinance originally sought to require sex offenders to pay a $600 registration fee--though they've changed that to $400 -- still a lot higher than the $60 required by the state.
A sex offender sued the city saying the ordinance amounts to heaping more punishment on those who have already done their time and is therefore unconstitutional.
Judge Mike Canaday has granted a preliminary injunction blocking enforcement of the ordinance for now and set the trial for Jan. 7.
