LAKE CHARLES (KPLC)-News of Tyrann Mathieu's dismissal from LSU Friday morning rattled Tiger nation and the rest of the college sports world. The Heisman Trophy finalist, commonly referred to as the Honey Badger, was kicked off the team for a violation of team policy.
Mathieu, who has two years of eligibility left, cannot play at an FBS school without sitting out a season. However, he can transfer to an FCS college and play immediately. The question everyone wants answered: Is Mathieu transferring to McNeese State University?
The rumors are swirling and numerous reports have surfaced saying that Mathieu was in fact at the McNeese State fieldhouse Friday night, meeting with Head Coach Matt Viator and the rest of the coaching staff. KPLC 7 Sports cannot confirm that these reports are true at the time.
Viator did tell KPLC 7 Sports at around 7 p.m. Friday night that there had been no contact with Mathieu. "You can't actually have contact until there is a release," he said. "From what I understand he got released today (Friday), but then the University (LSU) will send out a release."
When asked if Viator would be interested in talking with the junior defensive back, he said the door was wide open. "I've never closed the door really to talk to anybody. I'm not sure of the siutuation here, so we would have to look into it."
