Folks betting big on Volunteer Center of SWLA

LAKE CHARLES, LA (KPLC) - Folks were digging deep in their pockets and betting against the odds Saturday night for the Volunteer Center of Southwest Louisiana.

The 2nd annual Casino Royale fundraiser had folks betting big on games like craps, blackjack and roulette. All proceeds from the night go to help continue the services offered at the Volunteer Center.

"It's going to a great cause and the beauty of it is you are having fun and there's not all the pressure of being in a real casino. It lets you experience playing just like you are in a real casino but yet doing it for a good cause. And there are only winners tonight, especially the Volunteer Center," said David Nixon, Volunteer Center SWLA Board of Directors President-Elect.

The Volunteer Center is also celebrating recently being accredited for excellence in service with their 2-1-1 program.

"It means we are delivering a quality product to the people of Southwest Louisiana," said Beverly McCormick, Volunteer Center SWLA Executive Director. "And because of tonight we will continue to provide that service. If anyone needs information about food, clothing, shelter - if they are homeless, or need a wheelchair - any sort of social service that you might night need you can dial 2-1-1 on a land line or cell phone."

Last year the Casino Royale fundraiser brought in $10,000. This year they are shooting to raise $20,000. There was also a live auction.
